Successful Intentions Newsletter
Hi ,
Leadership isn't so easy. In fact it can be pretty messy!
The truth is you borrow your management style from how you were managed as a child. Which means you should feel sorry for that dictatorial manager - he or she probably had a tough time growing up!
So, what does it mean to be Authentic? In my experience Authentic is nothing more than the fullest expression of who you are. You can't be "artificially authentic".
Three Key Factors for Expressing Authentic Leadership
- Awareness: Are you aware of your leadership style? How do you come across to others? Can you shift your style to suit the situation and the individual differences of the people you lead?
- Resilience: One way to see resilience is in terms of the balance between Positive and Negative mood states. When you feel good, your thinking becomes more creative, integrative, flexible and open to information. You are more resilient in the face of crises. A Positive mood creates an entirely different way of thinking than a Negative mood.
| Positive Doctors make better Doctors! For example, in one study, a group of Doctors were made to feel good by giving them a small bag of lollies. Then all the Doctors were asked to think aloud while they solved a case of a patient with liver disease. Doctors who felt good were faster to integrate case information and less likely to become anchored on initial thoughts or come to premature closure in their diagnosis. |
- Flexibilty: Do you know yourself well enough to be confident that you could change direction if you had to? How well do you accept feedback - positive or negative? can you see opportunity better than most? Are you prepared to let go of the usual way of doing things for an entirely new approach? How "set in your ways" have you become?
Practicing Authenticity
Authenticity is being genuine about who you are with your team members, colleagues, supervisors. It's about bringing your whole self to work, which makes sense when you think that work is where you spend the most hours, days, weeks, and years of your life!
