Work would be so much easier if it wasn't for people!

We're usually so caught up in "doing the business" and producing the results (or being seen to produce the results!) that we overlook what it feels like to work here.

Yet, we are humans not business units! We bring our whole selves to work. There is much more going on in the invisible realm of working; our thoughts, feelings and attitudes; our values, beliefs and essential character; and even in the deepest architecture of our identity.

The way to get the best from teams is to harness both the visible business structures and the invisible personal structures. Engage both head and heart. You can't have one without the other!

So, how do you do that? Here are four critical steps:

  1. Give a commitment to the growth and success of each team member.
  2. Express appreciation of individual gifts.
  3. Listen deeply to foster "thinking together" - the essence of dialogue.
  4. Practice openness and trust, essential ingredients for healthy teams.
