Successful Intentions Newsletter
Hi ,
And what have you done? Another year over. A new one just begun.
The thing about making a new beginning is that first there has to be an ending!
You have to lose the old behaviour before you can reach for the new. And mostly, we're reluctant to let go! Even when you think you've let go of the past it can take quite a while before the new behaviour really takes over. And that "in-between" time can feel really uncomfortable.
But change doesn't happen overnight! There are three phases of change:
- Ending : Letting go of the old ways and the old identity. This is a time of dealing with loss. Comprehending the reality of losing something familiar whether you're motivated to make the transition or not. Losing cigarettes, chocolate, a job, a house, a spouse! Take the time to grieve for what you're leaving behind.
- Transition: This is the in-between time when the old is gone but the new isn't fully operational. It's when important "realignments" and "repatternings" take place. This is a place for both danger and opportunity. The long dark night of the soul. It is the seedbed of the new beginnings you seek.
- New Beginning: Coming out of the transition and making a new beginning. This is when you develop the new identity, experience the new energy, and discover a new sense of purpose.
You might think you can simply "get on with it" and "just do it!" But successful change ALWAYS involves these three phases. How well do you let go of the old ways of doing things, go through the difficult time between the old way and the new, and come out doing things the new way? Not that often!
If you really want to make some big changes this year, then give yourself (and others) permission to fully experience each phase.
Successful change is in the transition!
