Successful Intentions Newsletter

Hi ,

Success in life belongs to those who influence!

Influence is the effect a person has on another, particularly to the benefit of the influencer. To influence literally means to cause an "in-flow" - of ideas, of suggested behaviours, of emotions, and of perceptions into the other.

What's your influencing style, ?

There are four influencing behaviour styles that we use to varying degrees:

  1. Persuading: Being enthusiastic, optimistic, impulsive, trusting.
  2. Supporting: Being understanding, listening, friendly, predictable.
  3. Analyzing: Being accurate, careful, systematic, and conscientious.
  4. Directing : Being direct, decisive, problem solving, risk taking.

The thing is, how do you match your influencing style with the way the other person prefers to be influenced?

Here are four ways to influence each style:

  1. Persuading: Talk about the "big picture", personal recognition for abilities, opportunities to motivate others, new and exciting ideas. Their greatest fear is rejection.
  2. Supporting: Talk with warmth and sincerity. Emphasize safety, dependability, collective team benefits. Their greatest fear is loss of security.
  3. Analyzing: Stick to the facts. Talk about quality, standards, control. Give them precise expectations and goals. Their greatest fear is criticism.
  4. Directing : Get to the "bottom line". Talk about new challenges and opportunities. Emphasize power and authority to take risks and make decisions. They most fear being taken advantage of.

If you recognize and respond to these influencing behaviour styles in others, then you will bring about a rich "in-flow" into your life and indeed, the lives of others!

Keep your intentions clear,

Peter Webb
