Successful Intentions Newsletter
Hi ,
Once upon a time, Goldilocks (not her real name) went out to the woods to seek fame and fortune. There she found a great big FMCG enterprise - "Big Bear and the Holding Company" - and she decided to go in as a junior account manager.
The first Practice Manager she worked for was too forceful. He was tough and gruff! The second Practice Manager she worked with wasn't forceful enough. He let everyone do what they wanted without any direction. But the third Practice Manager was just right! He declared himself and he let everyone know clearly where he stood on issues.
After a while she grew tired of being junior account manager so she went upstairs to become an Assistant Creative Director.
The first Creative Director she worked for was too enabling. He was so warm and fuzzy and engaged everyone's input but no-one knew what direction to take! The second Creative Director was too cold and unreceptive to new ideas. But the third Creative Director was just right! He appreciated ideas and empowered everyone to do their best, without losing sight of the overall objectives.
When Goldilocks left the company (or rather "chased" from the company, but that's another story!) to set up her own brand marketing agency, she realized that successful leaders balance two dimensions, Forceful and Enabling.
| Forceful | Enabling |
| Strong leader | Enables subordinates |
| Declares self | Receptive to others' ideas |
| Makes tough calls | Compassionate |
| Makes judgments | Shows appreciation |
| Forces issues | Fosters harmony |
The trick to getting the best out of her people, she decided, was to become versatile in balancing clear direction with compassionate encouragement of individual performance.
This seemed just right for Goldilocks, and because she was so successful she accepted an obscenely lucrative buy-out offer from a rival firm and lived happily ever after!
