Successful Intentions Newsletter
Hi ,
To decide or not to decide - that is the question!
There are only so many decisions you can make in a day and it's easy to exceed your quota. The trick is in knowing which decisions are significant and which are necessary.
Two dimensions affect decision making:
- How certain you are of the outcome, and
- What level of agreement you have around making the decision.
With that in mind, think of decisions occurring along four strategic time horizons
- The Transactional horizon is for immediate "must decide here-and-now" decisions. They may be critical or mundane, but now is the time to make them.
- The Transpositional horizon is within a few weeks. There is time to consider the decision from different positions or perspectives. Usually this involves a little research or investigation, but there is an immanent deadline which must be met.
- The Transgressional horizon is out to a few months. This involves decisions leading to new ways of doing things. It can't be "same, same, but different". You have to find a way to "cross barriers" that stand in your way.
- The Transformational horizon is beyond a few months to a year or more. Undertaking a long term project or a course of study are examples of Transformational horizons where the outcome of the decision is deeply personal and has the potential to permanently change your outlook on "life, the universe, and everything"!
So , now you can frame your decisions within the strategic time horizon that suits you best!
Keep your intentions clear,
Peter Webb
